A Delta Airlines plane crash at Toronto Pearson Airport left passengers and aviation experts in shock. The Bombardier CRJ-900 jet flipped upside down while attempting to land amid strong winds and heavy snow. Fortunately, all 80 passengers and crew members survived, though 17 people suffered injuries.
The crash is under investigation, with weather conditions and a missing wing being considered as possible causes. Here’s everything we know so far.
On Monday afternoon, a Delta Airlines plane crash unfolded at Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada. Delta Flight 4819, arriving from Minneapolis, attempted to land amid harsh winter conditions. Instead of a smooth landing, the aircraft flipped upside down, losing a wing in the process.
Firefighters rushed to the scene, spraying water on the burning wreckage as passengers scrambled to evacuate. Images and videos from the site showed people exiting through emergency exits, walking on the snow-covered tarmac.
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but experts have pointed to multiple factors, including:
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has taken over the investigation and will analyze the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder to uncover the truth.
Passengers described the landing as extremely rough, with the plane suddenly losing control before flipping over. One passenger said, “It felt like we were skidding, and then suddenly, we were upside down.”
Air traffic controllers immediately noticed the unusual landing and contacted a nearby medical helicopter, which was already in the area.
“Just so you’re aware, there are people outside walking around the aircraft,” one of the controllers said.
“Yeah, we’ve got it. The aircraft is upside down and burning,” the helicopter pilot replied.
Despite the Delta Airlines plane crash, there were no fatalities, which is nothing short of a miracle. However, 17 people were injured, and 18 were taken to nearby hospitals for medical evaluation.
“We are very grateful there was no loss of life and only minor injuries,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
Footage from the scene showed passengers and crew evacuating through the emergency exits as smoke billowed from the wreckage.
The Bombardier CRJ-900 is a regional jet known for its efficiency and reliability. It is widely used by Delta Airlines through its subsidiary, Endeavor Air.
Despite being designed to handle strong winds, experts believe the missing wing may have played a role in the crash.
Aviation expert John Cox pointed out that a missing wing could cause a plane to roll over uncontrollably.
“If one wing is missing, it’s going to have a tendency to roll over,” Cox explained.
Investigators are working to determine if the wing detached mid-air or upon landing. The results of the black box analysis will provide more clarity on this.
The Meteorological Service of Canada reported severe weather at Toronto Pearson Airport at the time of the crash:
Pilots are trained to handle such conditions, but strong crosswinds combined with possible structural damage may have made landing impossible.
Following the crash, Delta Airlines issued a statement: “Our primary concern is the safety of our passengers and crew. We are cooperating fully with investigators to determine the cause of this incident.”
Meanwhile, Endeavor Air, which operates CRJ-900s for Delta, is also reviewing its fleet to ensure safety compliance.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the Delta Airlines plane crash. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading efforts to analyze:
The findings will help determine if mechanical failure, pilot error, or extreme weather led to the crash.

This Delta Airlines plane crash could have been far worse. Thankfully, all passengers survived, but the incident raises serious questions about aircraft safety in extreme weather. As investigations continue, airlines may need to revisit their safety measures and pilot training to prevent such accidents in the future.
