In a game that was reduced to just seven overs per side due to heavy rain and lightning, Australia demonstrated their prowess with both the bat and ball to take a commanding 1-0 lead in their T20I series against Pakistan at the Gabba. Despite the shortened format, the match still delivered plenty of drama, with Australia posting an imposing total of 93/4, a score that proved far too much for a Pakistan side that struggled throughout their chase.
The game was delayed significantly by rain and lightning, forcing the match to be reduced to a seven-over format for both teams. While the abbreviated nature of the contest added an extra layer of unpredictability, it didn’t diminish the intensity of the action. Australia, having been asked to bat first by Pakistan, wasted no time in making the most of the limited overs they had.
Australia’s opening partnership, featuring the aggressive Jake Fraser-McGurk and the explosive Glenn Maxwell, made the most of the reduced overs, racing out of the blocks from ball one. Fraser-McGurk, in particular, took on Pakistan’s new-ball bowlers with vigor. Shaheen Afridi, who had been Pakistan’s most reliable bowler in recent times, was taken to task by Fraser-McGurk, who blasted two consecutive boundaries off the left-arm pacer in the opening over. The over was rounded off with a six from Matthew Short, who took Afridi to the cleaners.
Pakistan, looking for a breakthrough, thought they had it when Fraser-McGurk, who had been looking dangerous, found the fielder at cover off the second over. However, this wicket brought Glenn Maxwell to the crease, and the Australian fans were soon treated to another display of his incredible hitting ability.
Maxwell entered with a clear intent and immediately took control of the game. He used his reverse scoop shot to devastating effect, a tactic that has become his trademark in recent T20 matches. The crowd watched in awe as Maxwell pummeled Naseem Shah for four boundaries in quick succession. Within the space of just two overs, Australia had raced to 33 runs, and Maxwell was leading the charge.

As Australia moved forward, Pakistan needed a bowler to stem the flow of runs, and Haris Rauf, often considered Maxwell’s nemesis in recent encounters, came in to try and find a way to silence the Australian batter. Rauf delivered a superb over, conceding just three runs and also taking the key wicket of Matthew Short, who had been aggressive earlier but fell victim to Rauf’s pinpoint accuracy.
Despite Rauf’s efforts, Maxwell wasn’t done. The Australian continued to charge ahead, showing no signs of slowing down. In a moment of sheer brilliance, Maxwell reverse-swept Shaheen Afridi for a six over the third-man region, sending the crowd into raptures. Then, against the pace of Rauf, Maxwell found a way to take control, smashing him for two sixes in a row to propel Australia to an imposing total.
Pakistan’s bowlers managed to pull things back somewhat when Abbas Afridi, in just his second over, removed Maxwell with a slower ball that deceived the Australian star. Maxwell’s knock of 43 from just 20 balls had been a game-changing contribution, but with his departure, Pakistan saw a glimmer of hope.
However, Marcus Stoinis, known for his ability to finish innings in style, quickly doused any thoughts of a fightback from the visitors. In the final over, bowled by Naseem Shah, Stoinis smashed a boundary straight down the ground before hitting another six and four to close out the innings in spectacular fashion. His quick-fire 21* from just eight balls pushed Australia to a formidable total of 93/4 in seven overs.
With 94 runs required to win in seven overs, Pakistan’s chase was always going to be an uphill battle, and it quickly unraveled under pressure. Australia’s pacers, led by Xavier Bartlett, came out firing from the very first ball of the innings, and it wasn’t long before Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble.
Sahibzada Farhan, who had earlier provided a glimpse of hope with back-to-back boundaries off Spencer Johnson, was sent back to the dugout just two balls later. Johnson had the last laugh when Farhan, attempting to cut a short ball, was caught in the slips.
The next over saw more disaster for Pakistan as Bartlett struck with his very first delivery. Mohammad Rizwan, who has been one of Pakistan’s most dependable batters in T20 cricket, could only manage a leading edge, and he was caught at backward point. The Pakistani batting order, already under pressure, had no answers to the fiery pace of Australia’s bowlers.
The loss of Farhan and Rizwan put Pakistan in a precarious position, and things got even worse as Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett ran riot. Ellis, known for his trademark slower deliveries, had Babar Azam caught behind the stumps with a brilliant piece of bowling. Irfan Khan followed suit, miscuing a shot and falling for a duck off the very first ball he faced from Ellis.
With Pakistan at 16/5, the chase was effectively over. The remaining Pakistani batters could do little to alter the outcome. Abbas Afridi, to his credit, fought valiantly, launching a couple of lusty blows to the boundary, but the damage was done. The Australian bowlers, led by Ellis (3/9) and Bartlett (3/13), ensured that Pakistan were bowled out for just 64/9 in seven overs, falling short by 29 runs.
In the end, Australia’s dominant performance, especially with the bat from Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, and a clinical effort from their pace trio—Spencer Johnson, Xavier Bartlett, and Nathan Ellis—proved to be too much for Pakistan. With a 29-run victory, Australia took a 1-0 lead in the T20I series, leaving Pakistan with much to ponder as they prepare for the second match.
